How to Apply Powder Coat Paint

Powder coat paint, or powder coating, is a very desirable finish for many reasons.   Powder coat paint is a highly specialized process that involves coating items with an electrostatic charged powder that cures to a hard, durable finish when heated. Powder coating boasts a 95% use rate because the powder that isn’t applied to the product can be collected, filtered, and reused. There are many color combinations available, and the process can be done at home if you have access to an air compressor, oven, and powder coating gun.

Instructions

1. Step 1

Prepare the product to be powder coated. Sanding or sand blasting works best to clean any old coatings or contaminants from the part.

1. Step 2

Blow the parts off with an air gun to remove any dust left behind from the preparation process. Hang the parts on a rack that can be grounded. Metal hooks work well here.

1. Step 3

Attach a ground wire to the rack. Fill your powder coating gun with the powder required for your project. You can talk to your supplier to be sure you are getting the right powder for your needs.

1. Step 4

Attach the air supply to your powder coating gun and plug the electrical cord into a suitable outlet. The electrical connection will give you the power needed to charge the powder.

1. Step 5

Coat the part, spraying the powder on smoothly and evenly. Once the part is completely covered, move the part to the oven and heat it at 375 to 400 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes. After heating, remove it from the oven and allow it to cool completely.
